Tidy Towns Laragh and Glendalough

Citizens Science ‘Adopt a River’

On Sat 18th ‘Adopt a River’ workshop took place at the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh. As part of our Junior TT initiatives Mary Kelly from UCD came to give a brief  presentation on the main groups of macroinvertebrates in the citizen science schemes with our young people and guardians. The Junior Tidy Towns will look at our local waterways, identify insects while also taking into account the environment to determine the level of pollution or how clean our water is.

Everyone got a chance to collect insects, place them in petri dishes and identify them under a microscope. If you wish to contact the TT group you can email us at laraghglendaloughTT@gmail.com.

Ballard Walk & Brockagh Trail

On Sunday 12th Ballard Walk & Brockagh Trail were officially opened. The 2.2km loop of Ballard Walk was opened by Bridie Stacey and is suitable for all ages, taking a path through a native forest and along the Avonmore River. There are a number of seats along the way featuring beautiful oak timber sculptured quotes created by Shane O’Draoi.

Finian McEvoy and Judy Doyle of the Laragh-Glendalough Tidy Towns, opened proceedings before being joined by Cathaoirleach for County Wicklow, Shay Cullen. Bridie Stacey was invited to open the walk as she has used this woodland since the 1930’s.

Afterward people walked to the Brockagh Trail which has three new waymarked trails of varying distances and inclines. Invited to open this trail was Bridie Merrigan, whose family were the last to live on the Brockagh settlement in 1954.

As a small token of appreciation for generously giving their time and sharing memories, both Bridie Stacey and Bridie Merrigan were presented with a rowan tree (mountain ash) to plant in their own gardens.

Supervalu TT Competition

We would like to remind the community the adjudicators will be around shortly. If you see unwanted rubbish around the area please dispose of it in the bins provided. While the group has regular tidy up evenings there is a need for everyone to help if and when you can to keep it looking well. Thank you.

AR Laragh and Glendalough

Active Retirement Group are finished now for their summer break. They will be returning back to their normal Tuesday mornings on 20th September.

Last week we were joined by our friends from Sunbeam for our monthly lunch. It was great to have them all back at our lunches. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed singing along with Ray Cranley, who kindly performs at our monthly lunches. Some members got up for a dance and a few members even got up to sing a few songs.

Members have had a busy few weeks, the group had a day trip to Leighlinbridge, a candle workshop with Craftycraic and Yoga with Louise. We hope all our members have a lovely Summer break and we look forward to seeing you all again in September.

If anyone would like to offer their services or share their skills with the group please contact the centre. For more information call Denise on 0404 45600, email brockaghoffice@gmail.com or drop in to the centre.
