Laragh Glendalough Notes Week Beg 22nd Aug 2022

Wicklow Mountains National Park Lectures

The Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) is Ireland’s National bird. However, like many breeding waders, Lapwings numbers have dramatically declined in Ireland in recent years, an estimated 58% from 1993 to 2008.

Cooldross lagonn and salt meadow is a 100 acre coastal site near Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow, owned and managed by the NPWS. It is also part of the Murrough SPA (Special Area of Protection).

Since 2017, the NPWS has been carrying out targeted conservation efforts to help this declining species at the Cooldross site and they have been achieving positive results. The number of Lapwings nest recorded rose from only 4 in 2020 to 19 in 2021!

To find out more about the Cooldross Breeding Lapwing Project and how the Lapwings have fared during 2022 breeding season, join us this Thursday, 25th of August at 7.30pm for a lecture by Jason Monaghan, NPWS Conservation Ranger.

Bright Stars

The Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh are re-launching the Baby & Toddler group on Wednesdays 10.30am – 12pm. Each week this group will provide a welcoming and lively space for parents and children to gather and grow. Our activities will include ‘messy play’, story and song, games (guest speakers), snack, tidy-up which will allow both you as the parent/carer and your child to meet friends, explore new things and learn.

The group provides a weekly get-together where you can meet with others who understand exactly where you are at this particular point of parenthood. Suggestions for dealing with sleepless nights, easing the pain of teething, and finding time for yourself are generally always points of discussion.

The group also provides a great opportunity to see developmental milestones in action. Your baby, for example, might be a newborn but there may be a mom or a dad with a 3 month old in the group, or a carer with a 9 month old who is crawling. It’s fascinating to see what lies ahead and again, to pick up some ideas from other parents/carers.

For some parents, grandparents and carers, the weekly catch-up and opportunity for children to play and make new friends is enough. For others, the support makes them that bit more confident in their parenting role. Come and check out our new group – wednesday 31st august 10.30 am.
